Wendell Berry wants to make everyone live in the middle of nowhere and have a humongous garden.

I doubt he wants to “make” everyone do so. Rather, he suggests everyone try it. I think thats a fairly important distinction.

Also, can you imagine if everyone in the world did take his advice?

My friend Parker has often remarked to me that Mr. Berry is just too much of an idealist. “We can’t make society do this” is the statement. I think we fool ourselves if we ever thought we could “make” society do anything. For those of us who dream, lives like that which Mr. Berry suggests are possible within our dreams if nothing else. This ambiguous “we” used as though a nation could ever decide on something in solidarity is completely unrealistic, if anything at all is.

I’d rather think, we do what we can do as individuals and we influence though love those near us. Attempting to control the vast and universal “we” is a pipe dream.

    PS, is Mr. Me you?
